Hammertoes are a deformity causing the toe to bend at the joint that can occur in people of all ages. In the diabetic population, hammertoes become a problem and a source of pain, callus formation and ulceration if left ignored. That is one of many things Dr. Tea Nguyen looks for during a diabetic foot evaluation.

Pressure points caused by abnormally shaped toes can be relieved with padding and proper shoe wear, such as wider toe boxes. In office treatment includes callus shaving and a minimally invasive office procedure to straighten the toe, if caught early enough.

Ignoring hammertoes can lead to irreversible deformity, ulceration and infection. Make sure your loved ones suffering from diabetes has a podiatrist this season. Annual diabetic foot checks are recommended. More often if deformities like hammertoes are present.
