Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery (MIFAS) FAQs

Why aren't there more foot and ankle specialists offering MIFAS?

MIFAS is a highly technical procedure that requires advanced training and intuition. The incisions are much smaller than traditional techniques, and therefore the anatomical structures are not completely exposed. MIFAS is gaining traction with patients’ demand for minimally invasive procedures for a faster recovery with fewer complications. Currently, Dr. Tea Nguyen is the only foot and ankle specialist in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties offering MIFAS in her office-based surgical suite.

What types of deformities can be addressed with MIFAS?

Bunions and hammertoes are the most common minimally invasive foot procedures and are offered at Pacific Point Podiatry. Bone spurs, heel pain, tarsal tunnel syndrome, flat feet in children, and ankle fractures are other conditions that can be addressed with MIFAS. Many of these procedures are performed in Dr. Tea’s office-based surgical suite offering convenience and comfort for patients.

What are the benefits of MIFAS?

Minimally invasive surgery offers patients several benefits, including:

  • Minimal postoperative pain and swelling
  • Small incisions with almost no scarring
  • Immediate weight-bearing in specialized shoes for 4 weeks
  • Same-day surgery, no overnight hospital stays
  • Significantly lower infection rates
  • Faster return to everyday life

Smaller incisions mean less trauma, less swelling, and less pain compared to traditional methods. Most patients only take ibuprofen or Tylenol for pain and can walk in a surgical shoe or boot immediately after surgery. Additionally, pins and screws are not needed to maintain the correction with MIFAS, so there is no issue with implant rejection.

What can you expect with minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery?

Many minimally invasive surgeries are performed using fluoroscopy to visualize the internal bones and tissues. Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging device that uses an x-ray beam passed through the body to create a continuous live image. Dr. Tea can view the live images on a monitor to perform the procedure while viewing the movement of internal organs in real-time.

Through a small 2-3mm incision, Dr. Tea inserts tiny scalpel blades, burrs, and other specialized instruments and performs the surgery using fluoroscopy equipment. Tiny surgical instruments allow her to operate effectively with minimal trauma to the surrounding tissues and structures.
