Small incisions, elegant results.
What is Minimally Invasive Foot & Ankle Surgery (MIFAS)?
Minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery uses smaller incisions, usually 2-3 millimeters long, to allow for a faster recovery while effectively correcting deformities. This is a highly skilled technique that requires advanced foot and ankle training, specialized equipment and has been validated by many foot and ankle experts over the past 30 years.
What types of deformities can be addressed with minimal incisions?
Bunions and hammertoes are the most common minimally invasive foot procedures and is offered at Pacific Point Podiatry. Bone spurs, heel pain, tarsal tunnel syndrome, flat feet in children and ankle fractures are other conditions that can be addressed with MIFAS as well. Many of these procedures are performed in her Office Based Surgical Suite offering convenience and comfort for patients.
Why aren't there more foot and ankle specialists offering MIFAS?
MIFAS is a highly technical procedure that requires advanced training and intuition. The incisions are much smaller compared to traditional techniques and therefore the anatomical structures are not completely exposed. MIFAS is gaining traction with patients’ demand for minimally invasive procedures for a faster recovery with fewer complications. Currently, Dr. Tea Nguyen is the only foot and ankle specialist in both Santa Cruz and Monterey County offering MIFAS in her Office Based Surgical Suite.
What are the benefits to MIFAS?
Smaller incisions means less trauma, less swelling and less pain compared to traditional methods. Most patients only take ibuprofen or Tylenol for pain and are able to walk in a surgical shoe or boot immediately after surgery. Additionally, pins and screws are not needed to maintain the correction with MIFAS so there is no issue with implant rejection.
Why choose Dr. Tea Nguyen for MIFAS?
Dr. Tea Nguyen has trained with experts in the field and uses a specialized instrument designed in Japan for MIFAS. It provides high torque and low speed preventing thermal necrosis of bone and soft tissue seen with standard equipment, while delivering an elegant result. She also performs many of these procedures in her Office Based Surgical Suite, complete with fluoroscopy for live imaging throughout the correction, making it convenient and comfortable for patients’ experience.
Dr. Nguyen’s patients’ safety is her number one priority so you can trust that her meticulous attention to detail, attentiveness to modern technology and concern for your overall well being will give you the best results.
