In addition to providing comprehensive foot and ankle care, Dr. Tea Nguyen is one of few fellowship-trained podiatrists in Santa Cruz County who specializes in wound care of the lower extremity. Wounds that are not properly cared for may lead to undesirable complications, such as infections and amputation. Early management and attentive care can prevent this.

Who is considered “at risk”?
If you have any of the following conditions, you are considered at high risk for amputations. The most common reasons include:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Lymphedema
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Poor nutrition
  • Pressure points not addressed appropriately
  • Prior wounds and/or amputations
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Surgery that resulted in an infection or retained orthopedic hardware
  • Venous insufficiency

Wounds that do not show progression within 30 days may stall and convert to a chronic state making it more difficult to heal, so don’t delay care.
